PHOENIX – The Wisconsin State Assembly last night [Tueday, December 13] passed an autism scholarship program that would provide vouchers up to $15,000 for 200 children to attend private schools or treatment programs of their parents’ choosing.
"This action is a positive step for expanding school choice for children in Wisconsin who need it the most," declared Clint Bolick, president and general counsel of the Alliance for School Choice, the nation's leading advocacy group for school choice programs targeted to disadvantaged schoolchildren. "We hope that the Senate will pass the bill and that Gov. Doyle will sign it."
The bill’s author, Rep. Kitty Rhoades, R-Hudson, modeled the program after a similar program in Ohio that began in 2004 and was expanded in 2005. Similar proposals are presently under consideration in Indiana, Pennsylvania and Kansas.
The bill, which passed with a 62-33 bipartisan vote, is now with the Wisconsin Senate for consideration.
