Define School Accountability
June 2005

Susan Mitchell, president of School Choice Wisconsin, called for perspective in the Milwaukee school accountability debate in a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Op-Ed. Her June 19 piece, "Define school accountability," highlights the low levels of student achievement in the The Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) that led to the creation of the Milwaukee Parental Choice Program.

"Such conditions persist despite a multitude of rules, regulations and standards that purport to advance educational accountability."

While Mitchell notes that MPS has made significant improvement in recent years, a disturbingly high achievement gap remains.

Mitchell also emphasizes the ongoing cooperation between the Department of Public Instruction and the school choice community to remove troubled schools from the choice program, as well as the need for the union opposed longitudinal study.

According to Mitchell, "[t]he test of accountability that most choice schools eagerly welcome is to increase the academic achievement of low-income students."
