A new study by the Thomas B. Fordham Institute found that a higher percentage (21.5%) of urban public school teachers send their children to private schools than other urban families (17.5%). The study, which assumes "that no one knows the condition and quality of public schools better than teachers who work in them everyday," was based on 2000 federal census data from the nation’s 100 largest cities.
The report also stated that lower-income teachers in cities with choice and charter school programs are enrolling more of their children in public schools, a possible indication "that choice is having the intended effect of spurring improvements in public education…"
