Associated Press Story Highlights Unique Educational Partnership
June 2004

A unique public-private partnership has expanded high quality neighborhood education options and reduced school busing in one of Milwaukee’s central city neighborhoods, according to an article filed by the Associated Press.

The AP report focuses on the Garden Homes Community of schools, premised on the belief that strong local schools can revitalize a declining neighborhood. The Garden Homes Community of Schools is a partnership between the Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) and a Lutheran school participating in the Milwaukee Parental Choice Program (MPCP).

The unique initiative reflects a vision shared by local leaders to reduce the number of students being bused out of the neighborhood by offering families local, high-quality educational alternatives. The "community of schools" includes a Lutheran parochial school; an innovative Montessori program operated by MPS and housed in the Lutheran school; and a high-achieving MPS school.

The choices are expanding, as Garden Homes Lutheran is expected to complete a $4.5 million dollar school building in January 2005 and a Christian high school is scheduled to open in the Fall of 2004.

The story of this exceptional partnership is drawing widespread interest, as others hope to replicate the Milwaukee inner-city neighborhood’s success.
