School Voucher Backers Say Voters On Their Side

Groups that favor school vouchers have released a poll that says most Georgians support vouchers.

The poll of 1,200 likely voters was funded by the Milton and Rose D. Friedman Foundation, an Indiana-based nonprofit organization that advocates giving parents tax money so their children can attend private schools.

The Georgia General Assembly is considering legislation that would give state-funded school vouchers to parents of special-needs students. Senate Bill 10, which has passed the Senate, is scheduled to be heard Wednesday in the House Education Committee.

According to the poll, 59 percent of Georgians favor the legislation, and 58 percent favor school vouchers in general.

Most poll respondents also preferred private schools and home schooling over public schools. More than 80 percent said parents are better able to make education decisions than school administrators. The poll was conducted by Strategic Vision of Atlanta and claims to have a margin of error of not more than 3 percent.

The results were released through the Catholic Archdiocese of Atlanta, the Georgia Family Council, the Southeastern Legal Foundation and the Alliance for School Choice --- all groups that favor school vouchers.
