Gov. Jim Doyle signed into law Friday a bill that will raise the cap on Milwaukee's distinctive voucher program to 22,500, increase accountability and increase funding for the state's class-size reduction program, called SAGE.
The governor, a Democrat, forged a compromise on the bill with Assembly Speaker John Gard, a Republican.
At a signing ceremony at the Hillside Branch of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee, Doyle said, "We reached this agreement in the nick of time," referring to the fact that hundreds of students in the program could have been displaced in the coming weeks.
