Debra Anderson’s son Derrick has a learning disability. He was struggling in public school and his mother felt his situation was hopeless. "To be honest with you, I didn’t see my son even graduating from school," she recounts.
"I felt like the public school system just kept passing him along and passing him along. They were just pushing him along and he was not getting an education."
"I felt like I was failing as a parent because I couldn’t get him into the proper schooling he needed. I wanted to find a school that would help him."
"We tried to move to a better public school system and it didn't work."
"I was feeling there was nothing I could do. I feel like I had no choice."
But then she learned about the McKay Scholarship Program, which provides children like Derrick with a taxpayer-funded voucher to attend a school of their parents’ choice.
"With the McKay Program, they untied my hands, they allowed me to choose the school that I wanted my son to go to simply because I wanted something better for my child."
"I couldn’t afford the private school if I didn’t have the McKay Scholarship," said Debra, who along with her husband, Pervis, both work full-time to support their four children.
Since using the voucher to enroll Derrick in a non-sectarian private school, Debra says his situation is improving.
"Derrick is happier, he talks more about school than he used to."
"At first, he hated to read. Now he loves to read. He’s doing great in school. They really stay on him to do what he needs to do. He’s bringing home better grades."
"Now, every morning I wake him up, he’s ready to go, he’s ready to get at it."
"I feel he has a good chance to do whatever he wants to do in life. The sky’s the limit for my son with this program. Because he’s doing excellent."
