Juanita Guzman is a single mother raising her two children, Rosalinda and Sasha Lorenzo. Both students are participation in the Milwaukee Parental Choice Program. Rosalinda is a junior at Milwaukee’s Pius XI High School. She’s a graduate of Notre Dame Middle School, where Sasha is a student.
Rosalinda has been in the choice program since 1999. She wants to be an architect and is preparing for college through Marquette University’s Upward Bound Program. Sasha, fresh from a role in "Annie," wants to be an actress. Her academic progress is spurred by one-on-one mentoring at Notre Dame.
Juanita places a high value on safety and discipline. She explains, "Being a single parent, it’s hard raising two kids. It helps that the schools are teaching discipline. And we do not live in a safe neighborhood. I don’t allow my girls to play outside. Notre Dame gives them someplace safe to go after school."
"The Legislature did a wonderful thing creating school choice. I pray that we don’t lose it," said Juanita.
