Dorothy Smith is a heroic and almost legendary figure in Milwaukee’s school choice movement. As a foster mother, guardian, and grandmother, she has enrolled nine different students in MPCP schools since 1993. She captures the essence of the program with these words: "It is my right as a parent to choose what school I want my children to go to."
Currently, her granddaughter Shakera and grandson Demetrion attend LaBrew Troopers Military University School. Dorothy takes an active role in their education, frequently volunteering at LaBrew.
"I am in that school every week, helping my family get the high-quality education they deserve. These schools are accountable to me."
She does not know where her family would be without school choice. "The choice program has made a difference in my children’s lives. Choice allows my children to be successful."
