Bill and Liz Zembrowski

Milwaukee

The Zembrowskis have four children. Three are in the Milwaukee Parental Choice Program. Zachary attends Prince of Peace Catholic School. Rachel and Luke attend St. Roman’s Catholic School. Matthew graduated from a Catholic high school, which cannot accept choice students because the school is not located in the city of Milwaukee.
“Our younger son has had some rough spots. When that happened, the teachers walked across the alley, knocked on the door and told us he was having problems,” said Bill.

“At my daughter’s school, I’m glad that I can go into the classroom and see what is going on. We are welcome there,” he said.

“School is hard enough for the kids without making it harder by sending them into a difficult situation. You can’t imagine the relief we feel when we know we have alternatives. We can pick a different school if we need to. We have been able to change schools based on curriculum,

and based on what each child needs. It is an incredible relief,” he said.

“When things are not working right for our children, we can use our power to choose and we can leave,” he said.

“I’m glad to see the diversity created by the choice program. I’m seeing Black kids, Hispanic kids, Asian kids. That’s really good.”

Liz agrees: “The choice program is benefiting all the kids because it’s increasing diversity. It’s allowing children who otherwise would not attend some private schools to go there.”

“We did not choose the schools because they teach religious values. We also picked the schools for their diversity and because they reinforced our values. Most of all, the schools provide our children the best opportunity to get into a good high school and college,” she said.
