Julia has four children. Three have participated in the Milwaukee Parental Choice Program: Jamaica, Ryanna, and Cleo. The oldest, Duane, attended Milwaukee Public Schools. “My son Cleo began first grade struggling to read. By the time Thanksgiving arrived, he was reading with clarity. In Cleo’s mind, reading is important. Now Cleo not only reads for academic purposes, he also reads for enjoyment. The smile on his face and the confidence in his heart and mind remain in the forefront of my mind everyday when I drop him off at school.”
“My daughter, Ryanna, has also approached learning with much more excitement, enthusiasm and optimism.”
“I’ve watched the commitment of teachers, staff and children work toward the goal of not just learning academics, but learning life choices. What better reinforcement could a parent ask for?”
“My daughter Jamaica is encountering African American males who are not only graduating from high school and going on to obtain their bachelors degrees, but who are also living a Christian lifestyle.”
“The choice program allows me to maintain and sustain my accountability in rearing my children and it keeps me accountable by allowing me to make the final choice.”
“Even though my children attend choice schools, I will continue to evaluate my children, the school, and myself to ensure that all of us are doing what is necessary for my children to succeed.”
“I’m confident that because I have a broader choice in where my children learn, we -child,school, parent - increase the odds of their graduating from high school and pursuing bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees.”
