Sylvia Slaughter has two children. Eriqua attends a private school through the A+ Opportunity Scholarship Program. Her son Malin attends public school.
Eriqua received access to an A+ scholarship when A.A. Dixon Public Elementary School received an F grade from the state.
Sylvia chose St. Michael’s Catholic Elementary School for Eriqua and talks about her experience with the A+ program.
"Eriqua has come a long way. There are so many different things she’s learned since being at St. Michael’s. I wouldn’t take her anywhere else. They have worked with her there tremendously."
"My experience with A.A. Dixon with my son was that the school wasn’t an environment that fostered learning."
"I was very upset about the idea of her going to Dixon, given their performance. In pre-school she wasn’t participating. She was like in a shell and wouldn’t answer. I thought that would only get worse in an environment like Dixon."
"Now, she wants to come to school. Before, it was just going along. Her speech is much clearer. Before, her words weren’t coming out clearly. Her sentences are clearer. She’s participating more."
"She is challenged at the private school. At St. Michael’s they learn how to respect other people. That helps the whole learning environment."
"Someday, I hope she can look back and see this was a challenge and that she did well, and it made a difference."
"Eriqua needs to have a good education because if she doesn’t learn anything, she’s not going to do well in high school, or life."
"I don’t have money to send her to private school. If she had to go to public school, it would be a set back. If they cut the voucher now, it would be devastating. She loves school. She loves to learn."
