Veronica Poe has four children. Brandon attends S.L. Jones Academy through the McKay Scholarship Program for children with disabilities. Her other children attend public schools.
When Veronica learned about the McKay Scholarship she was grateful for a chance to find a school that could adequately address Brandon’s speech impairment.
"He was in public school since kindergarten. It didn’t give him what he needed. When you’d look at his grades, he was stuck in time. They weren’t giving him an education," Veronica said.
"I thought the McKay Scholarship was a chance for my son to grow," she said.
"Since he’s been in the private school he doesn’t stutter anymore. He has confidence. He
knows now that someone cares if he learns something. He is not just another number."
"He’s up in the morning before I am. He’s ready to go. His backpack is ready to go. He has this idea he wants to go to school. He wants to learn."
"When the teacher talks, she is talking directly to the child. When he misses a beat, she works with him and gets him on track. The teachers actually stop to make sure he understands, " she said.
"If he wasn’t in this program, I would have to pay to put him in a private school and I would have to get another job to pay tuition."
"I think he has dreams now. He wants to be a fireman. I think he might someday go to college."
