 Johnietta McGrady is raising two children and two grandchildren. Her children, Trinietta and Atlas attend St. Thomas Aquinas School through the Cleveland Scholarship Program. Her grandsons attend Cleveland Public Schools.
"The private schools have been really inspirational to my children. The schools give me a lot of tools to work with my children," Johnietta said.
"The discipline is strict. They take the time to find out the children’s weaknesses and talk to the parents about how they can work with the child to bring their grades up."
"Sometimes it frustrating to have kids in both private and public schools. But when I see what is happening with my grandkids, it confirms that I made the right choice for my children."
"I definitely don’t want my kids to end up in the public school system because they want to learn. When a child wants to learn, that’s important."
"If they would be in public school they would not be as motivated. The dress code helps keeps their mind focused on their education. Kids tease each other about what they don’t have. My son is just noticing that. If he was in public school, he would just be taken over by that competition."
"If you go to school, you can get an education and be what you want. But you have to do it yourself. My children know that what they do today will effect their tomorrow."
"I’m a recovering alcoholic. I don’t want that to happen to my kids."
"They know they have to make their own choices. The Catholic school is helping them make positive choices. If they can make good choices now, they will learn how to make good choices later on."
"I’m already working two part-time jobs and God knows, I definitely could not send my kids to private schools without the voucher program. The Cleveland Scholarship Program has been really wonderful in my life."
