Mr. and Mrs. Lopez have five children. Two are enrolled in the Milwaukee Parental Choice Program. Rosy and Jessica attend a bilingual Catholic middle school, called Notre Dame. The other three are enrolled in the Milwaukee Public Schools. The family hopes that Abraham will be able to use the choice program to attend a bilingual Catholic middle school.
Monica Lopez reflected on her experiences with the Milwaukee Parental Choice Program:
“Notre Dame is a wonderful school because they teach the children respect for other people. They teach the girls how to go for higher education. They are already talking about that in middle school. I really like to hear that. They are always looking for programs for the girls and help keep them very active, even in the summer, so they are not just sitting around.”
I wish we had the money to send the children to a good school but we don’t have the money.”
“The school is very good about getting resources and getting information to us to help our children, to keep our kids off the street, to keep them active and to keep them doing good
things, doing the right things.”
“There are so many children in the neighborhood who don’t finish high school. They don’t have good jobs and it’s hard for them to live.”
“I hope my kids can go to college and get a good job and be whatever they want to be. I want my kids to do something good when they are old. I want to prepare them as much as possible because life is not easy. You always need a good education to be what you want to be.”
